Marquette's year in review: Highlights from 2018
2018 ended on a high note and ushered in the new year with great momentum. Marquette welcomed its biggest freshman class. New academic programs were launched. University leadership welcomed new employees. Athletic teams celebrated success on the field and an engineering student represented the United States in speed skating at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Two new buildings broke ground and a new residence hall opened its doors.

Marquette celebrates the career of 93-year-old professor Peter Schelkun

If you have been around for 93 years, odds are you've made a lot of friends. But if you have the kind of personality Dr. Peter Schelkun does, you have even more. Inside Marquette University's School of Dentistry, a one-of-a-kind man is "calling it good." If practicing dentistry for 50 years wasn't enough, Dr. Schelkun has also taught for 30 years at Marquette.

 As an undergrad at Marquette University, I majored in Speech Pathology and Audiology and Public Relations. Now I’m getting my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I’m like any other college student, active in both my studies and extracurriculars. What most people around me didn’t know is that -- despite moving to the United States almost 14 years ago -- I wasn’t a U.S. citizen.

January reflection: New year is a time for new perspectives

The New Year is both a time of reflection as to what has happened in the past, as well as an opportunity to look to the future. At Marquette we faced our share of challenges and changes last year. We also saw some of our most significant successes. We are always called to look at all we have done and where we go from here. In each scenario, God asks us to see God in all the events of our lives. To thank God for the gifts and graces we have received, and to pray that God will lead us as we strive to better ourselves, our community, our world, and particularly Marquette University. This is what an Examen is all about. This is what we are as a Catholic and Jesuit University.
Soon we will celebrate two important parts of our Marquette tradition. Mission Week allows us to focus on what really matters at Marquette. Like the experience of St. Ignatius, it allows us to open our hearts, minds and spirits as we search for truth, as we listen to the stories and experiences of others, and as we reflect and pray for God's call to each of us.
During Mission Week we will celebrate National Marquette Day. This is an opportunity for us to share our Marquette pride with others across the country and around the world as we celebrate not just basketball, but all aspects of our Marquette mission. We cheer for Marquette in the Chapel, in the classroom, in the library, in the residence halls, and yes, on the athletic courts and fields.
St. Ignatius called us to "go and set the world on fire." In these days after Christmas, we continue to acknowledge and live our Christian beliefs that started with that baby in the manger. As we celebrated the Epiphany, the Gospel story of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan marked the beginning of his public ministry. In much the same way, the service provided by members of the Marquette community are the start, or maybe the continuation, of our mission and ministry.
May the love for the Child Jesus born on Christmas continue to light your way and warm your heart in 2019. In the new year let us be amazed with the potential and possibility God presents to us. Look at life with a new perspective, with a new purpose.

An Ignatian Examen year-end reflection

Rather than fall into a post-Christmas slump or head into obsessing about New Year’s Resolutions, St. Ignatius has a different invitation for us. He invites us to participate in, what he termed, the most important prayer that we could say each day. He writes that even if we don’t have time for any other prayer or spiritual reading in the day, we must make time for the Examen, a way of taking inventory of who we have been this day, who we are called to be, what gets in our way, what helps us stay on our best paths, and what we can try to improve for tomorrow.

'Open to Your Life's Purpose': Mission Week is Feb. 4-10 on campus
As. St. Ignatius sat quietly by the river, he experienced an opening of his heart, his mind and his soul. He saw everything in a new way. With this new perspective, he understood his life’s purpose: to live God’s will. During Mission Week 2019, students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to listen to inspirational speakers, participate in service, pray, worship and reflect. In the quiet clarity of being open, we come to understand the Divine in all things, and we begin to understand our place among them.

Former MPD assistant chief named chief of Marquette University Police Department

As assistant chief of the Milwaukee Police Department, Edith Hudson was responsible for one-third of the department’s personnel -- approximately 800 police and civilian employees. She said her dedication to community policing came when she took over command responsibilities for District 3, which includes Marquette University and its Near West Side neighborhood.
"I was introduced to a team of police personnel and dedicated community members who were committed to collaborative, community-focused policing," Hudson said. "I saw how this type of policing can change neighborhoods and change lives — this experience formed my policing philosophy for the rest of my professional life. I am thrilled to now bring my decades of experience to Marquette."

Marquette College of Health Sciences receives $1 million gift to establish a neurologic disorder rehabilitation clinic
The gift will establish the Neuro Recovery Clinic to treat individuals with chronic disability following neurologic conditions like stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury through intensive and long-term services not available in our current health care marketplace. It will be located in Cramer Hall on Marquette’s campus, adjacent to the Marquette Physical Therapy Clinic and the Marquette Speech and Hearing Clinic.

Washington Times: Healing trauma in U.S. Cities

As an engineer, I have always been fascinated with the mechanics of how things operate. If one component of a process malfunctions, it can break down an entire system. Our brain and body work much the same. Over the past few years, I have learned how generational trauma fundamentally alters brain processes and development. The idea that Milwaukee needed a collaborative effort to address trauma became apparent to me in late 2017.

MU Club of San Diego collaborates with Burrito Boyz to cook and serve food to those in need
San Diego has the fourth largest homeless population in the country, and more than 20 members of the MU Club of San Diego stepped up to the challenge on Dec. 30 to cook, assemble and distribute 600 burrito meals in collaboration with Burrito Boyz, whose mission is to nourish the spirit as well as the hunger of those in need.

Marquette College of Nursing pilots senior fitness program with St. Camillus
The College of Nursing is partnering with St. Camillus Life Plan Community in Milwaukee on a functional fitness project called Physical Activity for Life for Seniors (PALS). The project is being implemented by College of Nursing students along with St. Camillus staff, and incorporates specific physical activities for the residents of St. Camillus. The 10-week physical activity program is geared toward helping older adults maintain their physical function and independence.

 Libby (Gard) Sobic, Arts '10, Law '16, was promoted to director and legal counsel of education policy at Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty in Milwaukee. She works closely with WILL's attorneys and policy staff and manages the K-12 education reform project.
