A Person for Others Award
Dr. Paul G. Gregerson, Arts ’79
Milwaukee, Wis.
Dr. Paul Gregerson’s work embodies the principle of cura personalis, the Jesuit value of deep care and respect for the dignity of the whole person. As the chief medical officer of the JWCH Institute Inc., a federally qualified health center in downtown Los Angeles, he leads efforts to provide medical care and supportive services to nearly 70,000 people, many of whom lack housing.
“I enjoy working with underserved populations and the homeless,” Paul says. “Helping to decrease health disparities and reduce homelessness gives me fulfillment.”
He began his journey at Marquette because of its academic excellence and Catholic, Jesuit identity. He took freshman biology with Professor James Barrett, who brought the topic alive and challenged Paul to continue the pre-med path. “The friendships and fun in the pre-medical program at Marquette are life-long memories,” he adds.
Considered a national expert on health care for people who are homeless, Paul is also a volunteer adjunct faculty member at both the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine and the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He is currently exploring ways to bring health care for homeless people to the community of Laguna Beach, Calif., the place where he intends to retire someday.
He is humbled by this award. “There are so many Marquette alumni doing incredible work to improve society and make the world a better and safer place,” he says. “I feel honored to be recognized for doing something that just feels right regardless.”
