Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award

NicholsonDr. Bonnie C. Nicholson, Grad ’98, ’01
Hattiesburg, Miss.

Since completing her doctorate in counseling psychology at Marquette, Dr. Bonnie Nicholson says the Jesuit concept of cura personalis—care for the whole person—has continued to shape her life, including her work as a professor of psychology and parenting researcher at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Bonnie is committed to training new mental health professionals to see each client as a whole person and ensure that they receive the best care. “I teach students the importance of advocating for the underserved, of reaching out to their communities, and offering their skills and talents freely — all values instilled in me through my Jesuit education,” she explains.

Cura personalis also influences Bonnie’s research focus. “It points me toward research topics that consider individuals’ strengths and diverse perspectives,” Bonnie says, “and ultimately seeks to ensure that this work helps improve the lives of parents, individuals, and families.” Her current research focuses on how parents can support young adults in the transition to college, exploring how overly involved parenting behaviors may affect student autonomy, distress tolerance, and mental health.

Bonnie is grateful for the mentorship of Professor Emeritus Robert Fox, who led her to consider a career in academia, helped connect her with colleagues for valuable practicum experiences and offered guidance as she began to teach. “His belief in my potential has been so influential throughout my career,” she says. “He shaped the parent I am, the colleague I strive to be and the researcher I have become.”

Fun Facts:

Name someone (past or present) with whom you'd like to have dinner.
My late mother, who passed away 15 years ago. I would love to let her know how her love has impacted our family, how her traditions continue to be such important aspects of our lives and how amazing her grandchildren are now.

What is one of your favorite Marquette memories?
I am most proud of my work as a founding member of the Counseling Psychology Student Organization at Marquette. I am proud to see all that this group continues to accomplish 20 years later!

Leave a congratulatory message for Bonnie!
