Young Alumna of the Year Award

HelfertAngela M. Helfert, Eng ’07
Portland, Ore.

For a Marquette basketball fan like Angela Helfert, the opportunity to work on the Fiserv Forum (home to the Marquette men’s basketball team and the Milwaukee Bucks) was a dream come true. As a senior design phase manager for Mortenson Construction, Angie loves seeing the tangible change created by the projects she works on, especially the positive impact of a construction project on the community.

Angie finds fulfillment in transforming dreams and ideas into projects that the operations team brings to life. After working for Mortenson in Milwaukee for 10 years, Angie brought her experience to their growing team in Portland.

Angie is committed to participating in community initiatives, service groups and volunteer positions, serving as a member of the Mortenson Portland Women’s Affinity Group. She also gives back to current Marquette students through the Marquette Mentors program. Angie says “Working with the students and their different personalities and goals has helped her become a better coach and mentor in her professional life.”

When Angie first toured Marquette, she fell in love with the energy of the campus. Although Marquette didn’t have a major in architecture, which was what Angie initially wanted to study, she chose to pursue civil engineering instead and hasn’t looked back. Angie credits her Marquette experience with teaching her to work harder than she ever had, manage her time, find different networks of people and utilize the resources provided, all skills she uses on a daily basis in her professional life.

Angie recalls how her Marquette professors prepared her for success after graduation: “Professor Meus helped make technical course material understandable and approachable, which is a good parallel to what’s required in the professional world.”
