Dr. Kevin A. Alby, H Sci ’06

Dr. Kevin Alby has accomplished more professionally during the time since he graduated from Marquette than many people do in a lifetime. Currently an associate professor and associate director of the clinical microbiology laboratory at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Kevin has established a reputation for excellence in the classroom and has made significant contributions to his profession as a prolific author and speaker.
Kevin has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and 12 book chapters. Along with his responsibilities overseeing the clinical microbiology laboratory, Kevin teaches a number of different learners, including clinical laboratory science students, medical students, residents, and fellows in the areas of microbiology and infectious disease.
Kevin has given more than 50 different lectures and presentations at conferences and institutions around the country and has been a part of multiple interdisciplinary research teams with federal funding from the NIH and CDC. Additionally, he serves as a member of numerous committees for the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute.
Kevin has given back to his profession, having served on multiple committees involved in education, training, and career development for several professional organizations. Through these efforts, he has had the opportunity to mentor other clinical microbiologists, including multiple Marquette alumni around the country. He strives not only to inform his students and the medical community about the role and importance of the clinical laboratory but also encourages best practices surrounding laboratory medicine every day.
