Barbara Gombar Andrie, Arts ’56 u and Stanley J. Andrie, Eng ’56 u

After his first year, Stan received a Marquette football scholarship, which enabled him to remain in school. In his sophomore year, he met another student, Barbara Gombar. They were married in 1956, recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, and are extremely grateful for their Marquette education. They are inspired by the words of Al McGuire, “Help one kid at a time. He will go back and help a few more.”
Stan, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, earned a Marquette Engineering degree in 1956 and then served in the Army Corps of Engineers. After his service in the Army, he earned a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University. He returned to Michigan to begin his career, working his way to the presidency of Canonie Inc. In addition to operations throughout the Great Lakes, his career highlights include extensive dredging of the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, harbor, the Sacramento River, and the successful restoration of areas impacted by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Oregon. Stan also enjoys time with his family, skiing, working with the sideline crew at Yale football games (where two of his sons played), and staying active with tennis and golf.
Barbara obtained a degree from Marquette in Liberal Arts in 1956. She treasures the experience of raising four sons and a daughter, helping in Stan’s business, and her own business career. She founded, with her children, a US-flagged marine transportation company, named Andrie Inc. The business enjoyed success as one of the largest transporters of asphalt, other petroleum products, cement, and chemicals on the Great Lakes.
Stan and Barbara retired to the South Carolina Low Country, where they spent happy years traveling, staying active with golf, horseback riding, hunting and other pursuits. They then returned to Milwaukee, the Marquette community, where it all began, forever grateful for the scholarship. Their five children and 14 grandchildren make special trips from different states to attend Marquette games. The Andries love for family and for the university prompted them to live by the words of Coach McGuire and establish The Stanley and Barbara Andrie Family Endowment to help student athletes so recipients, in turn, can help others when they graduate.
