Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Award Recipients

ChonesLifetime Achievement Award
James B. Chones, Arts ’73
Beachwood, Ohio

In his unmistakable voice, Al McGuire told Jim Chones’s father, “If Jimmy does what I tell him to, he’ll be a pro.” Jim’s dreams of playing professional basketball did indeed come true. The Marquette men’s basketball team provided the foundation for Jim’s successful NBA career playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, culminating in an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980. Since his retirement from the NBA in 1982, Jim has worked as a sports analyst for the Cavaliers and recently became a partner in CyberAthletix Sports Digital Technology Co.

LeeDistinguished Alumnus of the Year Award
Joseph L. Lee, Eng ’91 u
Western Springs, Ill.

As the chairman of Club Champion Golf, Joe Lee has dedicated the past 13 years of his professional life to helping golfers play better by perfectly fitting equipment to their swing and body types, which enables them to enjoy the game more each time they play. The foundation for Joe’s career was solidified during his time as a member of the Marquette men’s golf team, and he is now able to combine his love for the game of golf with the opportunity to serve others.

ColsonYoung Alumnus of the Year Award
Nathaniel H. Colson, Bus Ad ’06 u
Mequon, Wis.

As the father of three young children, Nathan Colson jokes that sometimes success is just getting to the other side of his kids’ bedtime. One of his real metrics for success, however — being intentional with his time and talents — can be traced to his experience on the Marquette men’s golf team. Nathan says, “The time and travel required to play college golf prepared me well for the trade-offs everyone faces in life. I realized quickly I couldn’t do everything well.”

Barbara Gombar Andrie, Arts ’56 u and Stanley J. Andrie, Eng ’56 u
Milwaukee, Wis.

After his first year, Stan received a Marquette football scholarship, which enabled him to remain in school. In his sophomore year, he met another student, Barbara Gombar. They were married in 1956, recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, and are extremely grateful for their Marquette education. They are inspired by the words of Al McGuire, “Help one kid at a time. He will go back and help a few more.”
