San Diego: Service Day

MU Club of San Diego Service Day

Join Marquette alumni and friends in the San Diego area in the true spirit of Ignatius as women and men for others.

After a successful turnout of alumni and friends for a previous Burrito Boyz service day with the MU Club of San Diego, we are now establishing a quarterly service event with the Burrito Boyz.

Volunteers will cook and assemble approximately 600 burritos and provide bread and water to the homeless. Wear comfortable casual clothes (Marquette blue and gold spirit wear is encouraged) and be prepared to carpool/caravan from Long Island Mike's Pizza to the distribution locations. Children over 10, young adults and current/future college students are welcome to participate.

About the Burrito Boyz
In November 2010, Michael and Mehrnaz Johnson started Hunger 2 Help, Inc. dba Burrito Boyz with their son Alec and his best friend Luke. Not only were they hoping to teach their son and his friends not to take things for granted, they wanted to DO something to help others. After their first Sunday downtown serving 54 hot breakfast burritos and bottles of water, the group knew they had started something special. After 5 full years without missing a Sunday, the Burrito Boyz and a cast of volunteers from San Diego and visitors from around the world have served over 100,000 meals! In addition to serving the street homeless population in San Diego, Michael and Mehrnaz are committed to sharing their story with others so that youth everywhere will be inspired to take action in their communities!

The Burrito Boyz Mission is to help nourish the spirit of the street homeless of San Diego County by providing dignity, hot food and comfort. San Diego County has seen the population of homeless increase to over 10,000 people. Regardless of the reasons, the Burrito Boyz was created to honor our brothers and sisters during their struggles and provide them with a hot meal and water served with dignity and respect.

Volunteering will consist of arriving at Long Island Mike’s Pizza located at 5250 Murphy Canyon Road, and upon arrival you will be given a name badge and job to do.  Job may be from cooking eggs and potatoes, to assembling burritos, making packs for the handicapped (who cannot walk the line), bagging dog and cat food and cleaning dishes.  At the end of about an hour or so, the group will have assembled approximately 600 burritos which are then loaded along with bread, water, books, tables into several trucks to take downtown.  After a gathering of the group and assignment of jobs for the distribution of the burritos and other items that are often donated, the group caravans downtown to 2 different locations to distribute everything.  Upon arrival there will be hundreds lined up, some who have been there for quite a while waiting for their first hot meal in a long time.  We complete our Sunday Mission by about 9:30 am.  Adults, teens, young and old are encouraged to attend!
