Marquette University Alumni Association Privacy Policy

Marquette University is committed to respecting your privacy as an alumnus/a, parent or friend.  We have adopted this privacy policy to protect MU Connect users.  We collect no information about you, other than information automatically collected and stored (see below), when you visit our website unless you choose to provide that information to us.

The following policies are in effect only for the Web pages, newsletters, discussion forums and electronic forms hosted by the Marquette University Alumni Association; these electronic resources are collectively referred to as MU Connect, the Marquette online alumni community.

Information Automatically Collected

Every computer connected to the Internet is given a domain name and a set of numbers, which serve as that computer's Internet protocol (IP) address. When a visitor requests a page from MU Connect or another Marquette University website, the university's Web servers automatically recognize that visitor's domain name and IP address. Domain names and IP addresses reveal nothing personal about users other than the IP address from which they have accessed the Marquette University website. Marquette uses this information to examine its Web traffic in aggregate, and to investigate misuse of the Marquette University online properties or to cooperate with law enforcement, when necessary. Marquette does not collect and evaluate information on specific individuals. Marquette's Web servers do not automatically record visitors' e-mail addresses.

When you browse through any website, certain personal information about you can be collected. We automatically collect and temporarily store the following information about your visit:

the date and time of your visit;
the pages you visited; and
the address of the website from which you came.

We use this information for statistical purposes and to help us make our site more useful to visitors. Unless it is specifically stated otherwise, no additional information is collected about you.

Portions of the Marquette website use Google Analytics, a web metrics service of Google, Inc. ("Google"). Google Analytics uses cookies, which are commonly used text files stored in your browser, to help analyze how users use the site. This cookie information (including your IP address and the Marquette web pages you visit) will be collected by Google and stored on Google servers. Google will use this information to help Marquette understand and evaluate your use of the website. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. You may refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser. However, please note that if you do disable cookies, you may not be able to use the full functionality of portions of the Marquette website (e.g. the MU Connect online alumni community). By using this website, you consent to the processing of data about you by Google in the manner and for the purposes set out above.

Cookies

From time to time, Marquette University may send "cookies" to users' computers. A cookie is a small piece of data that is sent to the user's Internet browser from a Web server and stored on the user's computer hard drive. A cookie can't read data from a computer's hard disk or read cookie files created by other websites. Cookies do not damage computer systems. Marquette uses cookies to identify which areas of its websites a user has visited or customized, so those pages may be readily accessible on the user's next visit. Marquette may use this information to better personalize the content, banners and promotions that users see on the university's website. Users can choose whether to accept cookies by changing the settings of their Internet browsers. Browsers can be reset to refuse all cookies or to show when a cookie is being sent. If users choose not to accept cookies, their experience on MU Connect and other websites may be diminished and some features may not work as intended.

Registration

Marquette University offers access to some services that require registration. Marquette may use registration contact information to notify users of new services by e-mail or postal mail. The university may also use visitors' IP addresses internally and share them with third parties. See Disclosure of Information to Outside Third Parties

Personally Provided Information and Use of Information by Marquette University

Marquette University does not require you provide personal information to visit our website; however, you may choose to provide us with personal information through an e-mail message, form, survey, etc. This information is used only to fulfill the stated purpose of your communication and/or participation.

Marquette University may request users' e-mail or mailing addresses for the purposes of conducting a survey or to provide additional services (for example, subscriptions to e-mail newsletters and announcement lists or information about conferences and special events). Whenever MU Connect requests the identity of a visitor, the purpose of the inquiry will be clearly indicated. Marquette maintains a strict "no spam" policy: It does not sell, rent, or otherwise provide e-mail addresses to third parties unless doing so is permitted by this Privacy Policy or is consented to by the user. Marquette University may from time to time send e-mail announcing new Marquette products and services.

When users sign up for MU Connect discussion forums, their names or aliases are recorded solely for purposes of maintaining their own accounts within the forums. This information is not used to monitor user activity within a forum, nor is it used to identify users outside the Marquette University online properties.

When visitors use co-branded services, or those provided by a third party, within the Marquette University online properties, their information may be passed to the co-brand or third party provider, whose use of the information is subject to their own applicable privacy policies.

Disclosure of Information to Outside Third Parties

Marquette University does not disclose, give, sell or transfer any personal information about our online visitors to third parties except as required by law.

3. Identify persons who may be violating the law, the Marquette University legal notice and website user agreement, or the rights of third parties, or persons who are otherwise misusing the Marquette University Network or its related properties

Marquette University is not responsible for any breach of security or for any actions of any third parties that receive the information, nor is the university responsible for such third-party privacy policies or their treatment of information about their users.
