M CLUB HY POPUCH MEMORIAL SERVICE AWARD

Jim NasJames A. Nasiopulos
Cedarburg, Wis.

Jim dedicated nearly his entire career to Marquette Athletics, and his contributions will impact student-athletes, staff and fans for years to come.

In the 31 years he spent at Marquette, Jim was deeply involved in the construction, renovation and management of athletic and recreational sports facilities. Two of his most memorable projects involved the planning, construction and ongoing maintenance of Valley Fields and the Al McGuire Center.

Jim began his tenure at Marquette in 1982, spending 11 years as the director of physical recreation and the Helfaer Tennis Stadium and Recreation Center. He also served as the head men’s golf coach from July 1986 to June 1993. In August 1993, he joined the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the primary administrator for facilities and event management. He retired in 2013 as the associate athletic director – facilities and event management.

Marquette’s mission and Jesuit values played a crucial role in how Jim executed his duties, which included the scheduling, set-up, and supervision of all home athletic competitions, post-season conferences and NCAA Championship events. He encouraged his staff to give every player and coach the best possible experience.

“Such an award is really an honor, which is made possible because a team of people, over many years of service, did their very best … magis and cura personalis in action,” he says. “Upon reflection, it’s rewarding to know that the Marquette M Club recognized the ‘behind the scenes’ accomplishments of our team through me.”

Fun Fact:

Jim says the most influential person in his life is his wife of 50 years, Phyllis, Grad ’90. “Her support and understanding throughout our marriage allowed me to focus on my career,” he says.
